Science is asking the question "What IS?" and seeking to define the answer.

Invention is asking the question "What can BE?" and is the action of applying what science has described to the needs and desires of the inventor.

Even if your premise that "major scientific discovery is at a kind of pause" were true, there are an infinite number of inventions left to be created from the science we already know.
