Use an LED bulb and you can use a brighter light bulb that uses less wattage. It'll also be less expensive to use.

Safe enough to try.  Is it bright enough like the 60 W or is it brighter? 100 will be fine too.

That wattage rating is really talking about heat.  Not electricity, heat.  Old-fashioned incandescent bulbs make light by getting literally white-hot.  That's a fair amount of heat to deal with and 60w is a known value.

120v, 60Hz is typical US residential power for things like wall outlets and light fixtures.

If you install LED bulbs, you can disregard the 60w limitation.  Virtually any LED bulb you will be able to fit into the fixture will not generate anywhere near as much heat as any incandescent bulb.  Put in a 100w-equivalent (note that lots of LED lamps are now being labeled as "equivalent" because American buyers are very familiar with the brightness of incandescent bulbs of a certain wattage) and don't worry about the wattage - that size of LED lamp uses less than 20 watts.

READ the edge of the base of the bulb.  it is not ok unless an ordinary bulb says it is 60w or less.  an LED or CFL bulb is ok.  do not use halogen in this fixture.  -- grampa

That only tells you the voltage of the lamp - the wattage varies according to the power it consumes (and critically the heat it gives out). It should be marked with 40W, 60W or 100W somewhere, anything 60 or less would be OK. Putting too high a wattage in will cause the fitting (or shade) to overheat and could cause a fire. Low energy equivalents are not usually an issue.

Somewhere on that bulb is another number with a w behind it or the word watt.  that s the number that should not exceed 60.

Neither of those things is the wattage of the bulb. If you dont know the wattage, dont use it
