Why was James Monroe so popular in his day but so obscured in us history what did he do ?

    Well, apart from being President for 8 years, he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase.  He was a Revolutionary War hero, personally cited for bravery by George Washington, and awarded one of the first purple hearts for wounds sustained during The Battle of Trenton.  By the end of his second term, 1825, a hero worship cult was developing around actual Heroes of the Revolution.  I wrote "actual" because by then, many claimed to have served heroically in the Revolution, but Washington's bravery citation of Monroe put him into a rare class by himself.
