Do many men use hair gel?

My bf has a ton of chest hair and had been putting gel in it lately.  Puts it in all kinds of weird formations and it’s hard, pointy, and downright sharp when it dries.  I hate it and want him to quit going it, but he says it’s the cool thing to do.

Men use hair gel, but not for that reason. I haven't known a man to do that.
