Why is my home so hot?

So It is winter in north carolina finally. I have noticed that my house without the hvac system on is 78 degrees inside. I tried turning on the air and it only goes down to 74 degrees. Why is my house doing this and what can I do to repair this? I run very hot and need it to be 68.

Pull the shades closed during the day and open your windows at night. Open the highest elevated opening so the heat can escape

turn the a/c off and open windows overnight -- the winter air should cool everything very nicely.  Use a fan if needed.
