could a coma like situation actually happen like in life on mars?

im so hooked im on the last episode I was interested in the actual science behind comas. I haven't found much except the basics of just being "asleep"like state for a very long time. Could you mind go to a place like Sam Tyler did and have you live another life? I know it sounds so stupid but could that actually happen to someone?
