How easy is it to install a loft ladder?
- JoeLv 41 month ago
It is big-time hard and dangerous. You need a perfectly squared off hole of an exact width and length which leaves rafters parallel to the sides. But before you cut anything, you need access above to find out if you clear electric lines and if the rafter spacing will allow the ladder installation. If and when you manage to do a perfect cut-out, you can now stand on a ladder with your head crammed to the ceiling while you hold and move the loft ladder into its final position with both hands while not falling off your ladder. Now use your third and fourth hands to fasten the screws in the exact spot needed to hold it up and keep it flush with a predetermined level to permit a tight finish molding. Or you can hire a guy that has done it at least three times. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is easy and 10 is Dammit-To-Hell, this is easily a 10.

the kind that retracts into the ceiling is a real PITA to get up there ... dang thing is heavy and you have to attach it from inside the loft to the ceiling joists. Two man job, imho. Man inside the loft uses a rope attached to the unit to help pull it up into place. -- granddad

Given a proper sized opening, The hardest part is holding it in place while fastening it. If you don't have the opening, framing the opening may require a lot of work.
