What physically or mentally can cause a squeaky, high pitched voice?

Helium is used to fill empty balloons, but if you inhale some helium for several seconds, you get a squeaky voice. Investigate properties of helium before trying this stunk.

Stress or fear can cause a voice to become high pitched, but normally a high pitch is due to using the voice box incorrectly as in speaking in a falsetto, or to physical conditions such as underdeveloped or stretched vocal cords or a nodule in the throat.  Read the article linked below for more information.
