Why do universities or private companies would hand out loads of free money to a student via a scholarship(s)? What do they get in return?

The hope is that you graduate, make a lot of money, and then donate some of that money back to the college.

It’s also for the publicity. Suppose you become famous, the college can say that you went there.

    Positive publicity.

Private companies will get tax deductions for scholarships awarded - dependent on the terms of the scholarships.

Some private companies may require the student to work for them for a couple of years at an entry level salary after graduating.
