will a cooling pad stop your laptop from over heating and not lasting too long ?

It will not hurt to have a cooling pad for it.  They help when you have the laptop on your lap or a soft surface with like bed where the vents for air intake may be blocked.  But if your laptop is overheating, you need to get it checked and the cause resolved.  A cooling fan is not going to prevent a laptop that has hardware issues from overheating.
