There is no best way. You need to find one that woks for you. Immersion is good but often impractical.

Having found a way that works for you there are two things you do need to do. Thef irst is to practice with great regularity. Little and often is best ratther doing a lot but not often. I would personally do some practice everyday.

The other important thing to do is to use the language at every opportunity. Digesting grammar books is not enough. You need to use the language and hopefully with native or very fluent speakers. You must not be afraid of making mistakes because you will make them. Instead learn from the corrections fluent speakers give you.

Immersion.  There's really no other way.  You have to go live where the language is spoken and live through the medium of that language and not a translated version.  No language really makes sense until you see how people live in an existence bounded by it.

    Barry is right.

You can do lessons, you can go to courses for languages, and that will help you up to a point, but languages are a thing that you learn by doing.

If you do French classes for 5 years, and then never visit France or any country that speaks French, you will never become fluent.

You have to throw yourself into the fire, be in a country that speaks that language. It will be hard, and you will struggle communicating basic things at first, but even 6 months in another country will help you learn a new language more than years of classrooms. You have to go there, and do it.
