All the desirable potential African colonies had been snapped up. The Italians wanted something to show for national pride, so they invaded the leftover territories like Eritrea which they captured in 1887. The second time the Ethiopians kicked them out with Russian help. The third invasion was Mussolini's idea of trying to demonstrate the superiority of Italian fascism by using chemical weapons and tanks on a helpless weak nation.
