Can a chest infection always be serious?

No, not always. There are viral infections that you get over on your own. True bacterial pneumonia is often easily treated with antibiotics at home.

It CAN always turn into something serious but it is not always. If there is shortness of breath and/or a fever or it doesn't continue to get better, or actually gets worse, you should always consult a doctor. Especially now if you are over 55 and have a comorbidity, with COVID going around, it is always safer to check it out.
