How would reducing food waste cut down on greenhouse gas emissions?

The theory is that if we wasted less food, we would have to grow less food.  Since producing some types of food produces greenhouse gases, the less we produce, the less greenhouse gases.

Where it fails is when the food is plant based, because plants are what remove greenhouse gases and produce oxygen.  So the more plants, the less greenhouse gases.
